Readme version 3.1 July 30, 2003

Current version of Verifycharges:

The current build number is
25.  The build number can be found by clicking "help, about" on the Verifycharges menu.

Build 25 corrects some minor problems in build 22, and offers to make a backup of your data files when you leave the program.

Build 22 contains primarily minor cosmetic improvements.  Features have been added to make checking account line items fit well with credit card line items, by enabling the ability to change the payee name on a line item, so checking account line items saying "check 1967" can be changed to "TXU Electric", for example.

Please
Click here to download  a newer copy of Verifycharges, if yours is not current.  It will not affect your registration status or your free trial length, unless you have already received an unlock code for an earlier version.  If you have received an unlock code for an earlier version, contact us at support@verifycharges.com before you download a newer version, so we can send you a replacement unlock code.

Notice:  You must have build 18 or later to be able to use your unlock code to register your copy of Verifycharges.

Known problems:

Problem:  In the line item screen, the highlighted line may be at the top or bottom of the window, in a situation, like reconciling a receipt, where you would prefer the highlighted "found" line to be near the center of the window.
Work around:  Highlight a line near the center of the window, then press F10 to initiate the lookup process.  The found line will be positioned to that spot.

Problem:  The Help menu cannot initiate the Verifycharges help.
Work around:  Open any screen, then press F1.  Use the "contents", "index" or "search" tabs to find the information you need.  Help is being developed at this time, so some topics may not be covered.  The best help examples are those found on this web site, by clicking on the red dots on the "Home" page.

Suggested Procedures to Download Credit Card Statements from Various Banks *

All credit cards - 1 time procedures:

1. Register one time with each bank or credit card organization, to gain the means to view and download statements, and view charges not yet on a statement.

Write down your User ID and password, and what credit card it is for, and place the note somewhere safe but accessible, because you will probably need it next month. You should not use the same User ID and password for more than one on-line account - either credit card or other registration.

2. Create a folder for the statements you will download each month. For example, if you just registered for your Capital One Visa card, "C:\My Documents\Credit Cards\Visa Capital One 4728" would be a good choice, if the last 4 digits of you credit card number is 4728.  Receipts sometimes show the entire credit card number, and sometimes show the last 4 digits.

Tips to download statements for various credit cards: *

Citibank Credit Cards: *

The following problem has been solved in 2002.  You will probably not encounter it.

Version 5.5 of Internet Explorer and version 6 of Netscape have caused a problem in the statement download process.  Citibank is currently working to solve it, and it may be solved before you read this.

If, when you click the "Go" button, then accept the default "Save this file to disk", the "Save as" screen offers to save an "HTM" file rather than a "QIF" file, perform the following steps:

  • Press cancel.

  • Click the "Go" button again.

  • This time, change from the default "Save this file to disk" to the "Open this file at its current location" selection (above it).

  • Click "OK".

  • You will again get the offer to "Save this file to disk".

  • Click "OK".  This time, a correctly named "QIF" file name will be presented.

  • Save it to the correct folder, as you normally would.

Capital One Credit Cards: *

1. Go to www.capitalone.com (You probably have it saved in your favorites).

2. Click on the "Manage Card Accounts" tab. You will move to the "Manage Card Accounts" page.

3. Click on the "log in" phrase. You will move to the User Name and Password screen.

4. Enter your User Name and Password. Click the "Log In" button. You will move to the "My Recent Activity" page. You can view a summary of your credit card status.

5. Click on the "My Statement" phrase (next to the first tab). You will move to the "My Statement" page. You will be viewing the most recent statement.

Note: If you want to change to an older statement, you will see in the top left area of the statement display a drop-down list that will enable you to select an older statement. Click on a statement that you need, then click the "VIEW" button. The page will be refreshed, now showing the statement you selected.

6. Scroll down until you see, on the left, the opportunity to download this statement.

7. Right click (not left click) on the "Quicken 98-2001 (.QIF)" line. You will get a multiple choice drop down box.

8. Left click on the "Save Target As...." line. You will get a "file download" screen, saying "Saving statement09272000.QIF from service capitalone.com". In a few seconds another screen, named "Save As" will appear, that lets you choose the folder to receive the downloaded statement file.

Note 1 The example would be for a statement dated September 27, 2000.

Note 2 We have occasionally had a different file name appear, not ending in ".QIF". We had to click the "cancel" button, then try again, up to 3 or 4 times, before the correct file name appeared. This may be a temporary problem that will be solved before you use this process.

9. Choose the folder described above (C:\My Documents\Credit Cards\Visa Capital One), that will contain all the statements for this credit card. You can browse for it, or simply type the full path in front of the File Name, being careful to not lose the file name. Use the left arrow or the home key as the very first keystroke, because if you start entering text, the highlighted file name will disappear, replaced by what you begin to enter. If you inadvertently do this, click the "cancel" button, then click the "download" button again to start over, with the file name displayed again. The "File Name" field should look like: "C:\My Documents\Credit Cards\Visa Capital One\statement09272000.QIF".

10. Click the "save" button. The file will download quickly.

11. The screen will change to "Download complete". Click the "Close" button to get rid of the download box.

12. In the top left area of the statement display you will find a drop-down list that will enable you to select an older statement. If this is the first time you have downloaded statements, you should download as many statements for each credit card as are available. Click on a statement that you need, then click the "VIEW" button, then follow this procedure again to download that statement.
